Why Concrete Countertops

Most homeowners looking to remodel their kitchen and bath often assume their countertop options are limited to the standard laminate, granite, quartz, marble, or other natural stone options. Today, however, a new contender has entered the market… CONCRETE!

Never heard of it? No problem! There has been quite a concrete countertop debate on whether or not it’s a good material to use or not. We think it’s a brilliant material that can leave your kitchen looking brilliant so below we will give you a quick rundown to see if you think concrete is a good fit for your kitchen or bathroom remodeling project.

Concrete Countertop Appearance Options:

If you are like me, your first thought of concrete is your driveway or patio. Throw that thought out of the window as concrete countertops look absolutely nothing like that. Concrete countertops have:

  • A sleek, clean look with multiple finish options from polished to natural matte
  • Endless color and style options
  • The ability to mix additional materials to enhance appearance

Concrete Countertop Durability & Maintenance:

Concrete Countertops are strong and durable. In fact a recent article on Houzz.com labels concrete countertops as, “the Nearly Indestructible Option”. This is why concrete countertops are such a popular choice for outdoor kitchens. That being said, do not think the concrete surface is invincible as it can be scratched with sharp objects or damaged by extreme heat (not weather heat, extreme heat). The concrete itself is not damaged, but the surface coat of sealer is. Not to worry as re-sealing is a simple process that can be performed by any homeowner with the right instructions.

Maintenance for concrete countertops is easy.

  • Clean with a mild soap and water.
  • Stay away from abrasive cleaners.
  • Use trivets under hot pot and pans and cutting boards when using knives
  • Re-seal if scratches become unattractive.

How Long Will Concrete Countertops Last:

Concrete countertops started being produced in the 1980’s, so it is really hard to say they will last more than 30yrs, but at this point as long as they are properly maintained there is no real reason to believe they will not last as long as their natural stone counterparts (ie: granite or quartz).
